Studio Vocum and Aptum present to you: ‘Vocum Radiant’.
Vocum Radiant is a ceramic high-fidelity sound and light sculpture, based on synesthetic color combinations.
Synesthesia is a neurological phenomenon where sensory perceptions are connected in unusual ways. People with synesthesia may “see” colors when they hear music, or “taste” flavors when reading words. This is an automatic and involuntary process in which two or more sensory perceptions merge.
Color, sound, tactile materials, and light are fused in Vocum Radiant to stimulate our senses. The forms of the sculpture mimic the spherical propagation* of sound in the air and the musical projection of brass instruments, creating a unique visual and auditory experience.
After Studio Vocum and Aptum participated together through Masterly in the Salone del Mobile in Milan, they recognized an affinity that led to this collaboration. Studio Vocum consists of visual artist Pierluigi Pompei and acoustician Adam Foxwell. Together with lighting artists Tineke Beunders and Nathan Wierink of Aptum, they combined knowledge from their respective fields into one sculpture.
Using audio spatialization — the manipulation of sound so that it seems to move around the listener — Studio Vocum creates a unique experience where sound characteristics (such as timbre) are mixed and orchestrated, while these processes are visually enhanced by color in the ceramic. Aptum integrated the element of light into the sculpture as an integral visual and sensory material.
During Dutch Design Week 2024, this immersive creation was unveiled for the first time in Eindhoven, where people could experience this sensory, synesthetic creation live.
