Aptum x sodalime
Dot is an intriguing large circle in the center of a wall-mounted frame. The luminescent circle appears to float. The colors are unrealistic and variable: depending on the viewer’s perspective. Dot plays with depth and hue.
Aptum and SodaLime combined technology, expertise, and materials to bring Dot to life — a small visual riddle.
SodaLime is a studio from Rotterdam, NL. They create art using dichroic glass, which is glass with a coating consisting of different colors. The color you see depends on natural light and viewing angle. Learn more about SodaLime here.
We received the glass from SodaLime to experiment with. Countless tests with positive and negative forms combined with lighting resulted in this surreal work.
When looking at Dot, the viewer wonders: What exactly am I seeing? Your eyes perceive the work, and your brain interprets it. It tells you that you’re looking at a three-dimensional object. Yet you realize that’s not quite right. What are you really looking at then? You look closer and from the side to see what perspective does to the work, to understand how it works. And just as you start doing that, the color changes.
Dot is framed in a square of various dimensions, depending on the available glass size and type. If you want to see Dot in person or know which pieces we still have in stock, contact us at tineke@aptumlighting.com or view Dot on the webshop.
A variation of Dot was designed for an award commissioned by Masterly. More information here.
